Stray and feral cats are often misunderstood, yet they are some of the most resilient, intelligent, and silently suffering animals in our communities. Whether a cat was born outside or ended up there after being abandoned, they all deserve kindness, safety, and care. Start with the Basics: Food and Water A consistent source of food and clean water can make all the difference. Choose high-quality wet food with at least 65% meat and no grains or fillers. Avoid dry food—it's dehydrating and offers poor nutrition. If you’re on a budget, even supermarket food is better than nothing, but always read the labels. Feeding at the same time and place daily helps the cat learn to trust you and feel safe.Water should be changed daily. In winter, try using insulated bowls or heated water dishes to prevent freezing.2. Check for a Microchip If the cat seems friendly and allows contact, there's a chance it's a stray rather than feral—and may belong to someone. Take the cat (safely, in a secure carrier) to a local vet, rescue, or shelter to have them scanned for a microchip. Understand the Difference: Stray vs Feral Stray cats are often former pets. They might be nervous but generally show interest in people, may approach or meow, and can often be rehomed with patience. Feral cats were born outside with no human contact. They're scared of people, silent, and prefer to keep their distance. They aren't candidates for rehoming—but you can still help them live better lives. 4. TNR – Trap, Neuter, Return The most humane and effective way to reduce suffering is through TNR. It means you trap the cat safely, get them neutered/spayed and health checked, and then return them to their territory. This stops endless breeding, fighting, disease spread, and kitten deaths.In the UK, Cats Protection is the go-to charity for help with TNR. Many of their branches offer:Free or subsidised neutering Loan of humane traps Advice and support throughout the process Reach out to your local branch directly or through their website. They understand feral cats and are often much more willing to help than other organisations. <a title="This is the link to Cats Protection" href="https://www.cats.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://www.cats.org.uk/">https://www.cats.org.uk/</a> 5. Building Simple Outdoor Shelters Feral cats need shelter from the cold, wind, and rain. You don’t need to be a carpenter to help—here’s how to make a basic one:Use a plastic storage box, Styrofoam cooler, or even an old bin. Cut a cat-sized hole on one side—keep it just a few inches above ground level to stop flooding. Line the inside with straw (never blankets or towels—they hold moisture). Raise the box off the ground with bricks or wood, and cover the roof with a waterproof tarp or bin bag. Place shelters in a quiet, hidden place where cats already feel safe. Whether you're adopting a tiny whirlwind of fluff or offering a home to a more mature cat, a bit of thoughtful preparation can make all the difference in helping your new companion feel safe, secure, and understood.As a feline behaviourist and nutritionist, I’ve helped many guardians through this transition—and I’m here to make it easier for you, too.1. Create a Safe First Space Before anything else, set up a quiet room or area where your cat can decompress when they first arrive. Think of this as their “safe zone”—a place with cozy bedding, a litter box, scratching post, water, and food. Let them explore at their own pace. Avoid introducing them to the whole house all at once—especially if you have other pets.Give them time. Let them come to you. Trust is something you build slowly, not something you expect immediately.2. Litter Box Essentials You’d be surprised how much litter box setup can affect a cat’s behaviour and wellbeing. Use unscented litter, skip the covered boxes, and place the tray somewhere quiet and private—but not tucked away where your cat can’t find it. For kittens, make sure the box is shallow enough to climb into easily. And remember, the golden rule: one box per cat, plus one extra.3. Feeding: Please, No Dry Food I can’t stress this enough—please don’t feed dry food. It’s heavily processed, full of carbohydrates cats don’t need, and it lacks moisture, which is essential for their health. Instead, start with a good quality wet food—look for options with at least 65% meat, no grains, no sugar, and no fillers. Skip popular supermarket brands. They might be easy to find, but they aren’t doing your cat any favours.Want to go a step further? A properly balanced raw or homemade diet can do wonders. Transition Food Slowly If your new cat or kitten comes with a diet you’d prefer to upgrade, don’t rush. Mix the new food in slowly: start with 90% of their current food and 10% of the new, then gradually adjust over 7–10 days. This avoids digestive upset and gives your cat time to adjust. Keep an eye on their appetite and stool along the way.5. Scratching and Enrichment Are Not Optional Scratching is natural and necessary—it’s how cats keep their claws healthy, stretch their bodies, and mark territory. Provide plenty of scratching options: vertical posts, horizontal pads, and ideally, something in every room your cat will use. Rotate toys often, use wand toys to mimic hunting, and make time for play every day—especially if you’re bringing home a kitten. Give Them Height and Hiding Spots Cats feel safer when they can get up high or tuck themselves away. Provide cat trees, window shelves, or even cardboard boxes and tunnels. These spaces are especially important for shy cats, or when other pets or young children are part of the home.7. Keep Things Calm and Consistent Cats love routine. Feed them at regular times, avoid loud noises during their adjustment period, and give them time to explore at their own pace. Some cats will settle in quickly—others might take a few weeks. That’s perfectly normal. Patience builds trust.8. Vet Visit and Basic Health Check If possible, find out in advance if your cat has been vaccinated, dewormed, or treated for fleas. A basic vet check shortly after adoption is a good idea—especially for adult cats. I also recommend a baseline blood and urine test for newly adopted cats if you can. And if you’re not sure what to ask the vet or which tests are worth doing, let me know. I’m happy to guide you.9. Please Consider Insurance Vet bills can add up quickly, especially if something unexpected happens. Pet insurance gives you peace of mind—and it’s best to get it sorted right away, while your cat is still healthy and eligible for full coverage. Look for a plan that covers both emergencies and chronic conditions.10. Every Cat Is Unique—And Not All Want to Be Lap Cats It’s important to remember that cats are not toys, and they don’t exist to fulfil our expectations of constant cuddles. Some will happily curl up on your lap for hours, while others will show love in quieter ways—like sitting nearby, blinking slowly at you, or following you from room to room without ever asking to be touched. That doesn’t mean they don’t love you—it just means they love you in their own way.Accepting your cat for who they are is one of the most important parts of being a great cat guardian.&nbsp; Need help with diet? Start with one quiet room where your kitten can safely explore, rest, and get used to their new surroundings. Avoid dry food entirely – even those marketed for kittens – as it’s highly processed, low in moisture, and often packed with starches that cats simply don’t need.Avoid popular supermarket brands that rely on cheap ingredients and misleading labels. Instead, choose premium wet foods or start exploring raw feeding (BARF – Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), which, when done correctly, offers excellent support for healthy growth and digestion.If you’re unsure where to begin or want guidance on how to transition safely, I offer personalised feeding plans to help you raise a thriving, well-nourished kitten from day one.&nbsp; 3. Litter Tray Essentials Choose a low-sided tray for easy access and avoid scented litter, which can overwhelm their sensitive noses. Clean the tray daily and place it in a calm, accessible location. If you’re raising more than one kitten, provide one tray per kitten plus one extra.Accidents can happen at first – patience and positive reinforcement go a long way. If litter habits become tricky, I can help with custom litter box training support.&nbsp; 4. Handle and Socialise Gently Early socialisation is crucial for raising a confident, relaxed cat. Gently handle your kitten daily, expose them to common household sounds, and introduce them to visitors, children, and other animals gradually and positively. Avoid overwhelming them – always let them retreat and rest when they need to.If you're introducing a kitten to a resident cat or dog, I offer behaviour guidance to make the process safe and smooth for everyone involved.&nbsp; 5. Enrichment and Play Kittens need daily mental and physical stimulation. Offer a variety of toys – wand teasers, soft mice, tunnels, and puzzle feeders – and rotate them to keep playtime fresh. Having cover in place early means you’ll never have to choose between finances and proper care.Look for a policy that covers lifelong conditions, dental care, and has a good track record for claims. Avoid the cheapest options with very limited coverage – peace of mind is worth a bit more.
